Direction of use
It is not necessary to stir or to thin Le Tonkinois before use.
Simply use straight from the tin. For best results apply a number
of coats sparingly, with a brush allowing each to dry for around
24 hours Expect 20 m2 on bare wood
and 30 m2 for subsequent applications.
Penetration into bare timber will depend on the porosity of the
wood (oil content etc.). It is recommended to sand lightly after
the first coat.
Light
wet or dry sanding between coats hereafter will achieve a higher
gloss finish, though technically it is net necessary. Avoid applying
Le Tonkinois in direct sunshine, excessively high températures,
and in windy or dusty conditions.
Le Tonkinois is not sensitive to atmospheric humidity during applications.
Satisfactory results can bc achieved even at lower temperatures
though naturally Le Tokinois will flowless well. After use a small
layer of white spirit over the remaining varnish in the can will
extend shelf-life and prevent a skin forming. Alternatively, store
the can upside-down. Clean brushes with white spirit, wash with
mild soap and rinse carefully in clean water, storing to dry for
next use.
On bare wood
The wood should be clean, free of dust and grease and preferably
dry. Clean the surface with a cloth moistened with water. Use white
spirit to remove grease or oil. Always sanding with the grain of
the wood, build up to 180 grit paper or finer and any finer grit
(as a matter of taste, preferable wet and dry) for between coats
when required.
Existing varnish finishes
Normally without much change to the shade or colour. Le Tonkinois
will adhere weil to pro-perly prepared existing varnish and paint
finishes. Use 220 grit paper for a good 'key'. Wood previously treated
with wax products cannot bc treated directly, but sec "Wooden floors
and parquet". Where the existing vamish is to bc removed, chemical
products shoul be avoided, to ensure that the remnants do not reduce
the efficiency of the Le Tonkinois. If such products are used, please
follow the directions for use closely.

Wooden floors and parquet
If the floor bas been waxed, it is necessary to remove approximately
1 mm (sanding or scraping) to ensure a good bond. Otherwise
follow the directions for "Bare wood". The surface should bc allowed
48 hours to cure before use.

Anti corrosive on metals
Le Tonkinois is an excellent anti-corrosive. Use on clean dustfree
and grease free surfaces, where all loose material/oxide etc. bas
been removed. Use 4 coats without sanding between each coat.Good
results can bc achieved with a spray-gun. Thin Le Tonkinois 10-15%
with white spirit and filter before use. Before last coat -sanding-wet-.

Special
remarks for maritime environment
Better mechanical protection can be achieved by application of
up to 8 coats. This is especially recommended for spars etc.
and immersed in water. Cleats, blocks etc. can also bc treated this
way with excellent results. Le Ton-kinois offers good grip for deck-shoes
even when the surface is wet.
The
satin varnish, stain/colour paint
Natural
pigments can be added at 50-60 grams per liter, applying the
first coat straight from the can and following coats with the pigment.
For satin surfacesLe Tonkinois bas to be mixed, in equal volumes,
with the organic solvent Gelomat. This mixture forms a very thin
layer, that takes somewhat longer to cure and produces a very light
shine.

Maintenance
Before re-coating, remove all loose material and sand the existing
surface with 220 grit paper. Application of 1-3 coats
every three years is usual to maintain good protection and appearance.
